Mayor Reiman announces $5.4M NJDOT grant
to increase waterfront access, improve roads
Roads will connect with forthcoming ferry service, other waterfront projects; increase public safety and public access to waterfront
CARTERET, NJ – Mayor Daniel J. Reiman has announced that the Borough has received a $5.4 million competitive grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation through the Local Transportation Projects Fund (LTPF).
The funds will be used to extend critical roadway infrastructure in two areas of the waterfront: Waterfront Boulevard Extension and Lighthouse Way Extension, Mayor Reiman said.
“We are very grateful to Gov. Phil Murphy and Transportation Commissioner Francis O’Connor for these incredibly valuable funds,” the Mayor said. “The grant will fund the construction of a new public roadway connecting the forthcoming Carteret Ferry Terminal to a proposed new intersection along Roosevelt Avenue adjacent to Noes Creek. The boulevard will include two lanes for traffic, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, sidewalks, landscaping, lighting and storm water improvements. The alignment of the road will parallel the Northern Riverwalk, which is currently under construction.
“The LTPF grant also will fund the connection of Lighthouse Way, which provides access to Waterfront Park, the Municipal Marina and Danielle’s Garden, to Port Carteret Drive and the recently completed Southern Riverwalk,” the Mayor continued. “Both road extensions will provide access to future developments within the Borough’s Waterfront Redevelopment Area that will feature more than $1 billion in private development and $100 million in public improvements. In addition to the Carteret Intermodal Transportation Building, these will include office, retail, and residential development.”
The proposed project will improve the safety of motorists and pedestrians seeking to access Waterfront Park, the ferry service, and the future ferry terminal.
“This project’s impact on safety becomes even more important when the future development of the site adjacent to the proposed roadway is taken into consideration,” Mayor Reiman said. “The Borough is expecting this land to feature a future film studio, hotel, retail space, and parking garages. These future additions to Carteret’s waterfront will create a wide range of job opportunities and will attract a high volume of residents and visitors, which will multiply the positive impact of the proposed project on safety and accessibility.”
Since 2002, the Reiman Administration has obtained more than $250 million in federal, state, county and other grants, many of which of have been highly competitive. More than $70 million has been obtained for the ferry service, its boats, buildings and infrastructure.
