Carteret, NJ – Mayor Dan Reiman has announced that the Borough of Carteret and the Veterans Alliance will host a series of Memorial Day observations on Sunday, May 27th.
The series of events will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Carteret Waterfront Park with the casting of the Memorial Wreaths, along with a veterans’ flag raising ceremony. Carteret’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will host its own ceremony following the laying of the wreaths, in front of the Carteret Library at 100 Cooke Avenue.
Veterans’ Alliance ceremonies will be held at 12:00 noon at Carteret Park, at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial. The event will be immediately followed by Carteret’s annual Memorial Day Parade, a popular attraction for visitors and residents alike, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Doc Fenick Clock Tower (by the Carteret High School), and ending at the Memorial Municipal Building, 61 Cooke Avenue. The event will conclude there with a town barbeque.
Carteret’s traditional Memorial Day Services attract thousands each year, including a host of veterans organizations, civic and community groups, and from throughout the area, the many supporters and friends of the U.S. military.
“Our Memorial Day Services are among our many ways of acknowledging those who have been willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our shared values,” Mayor Reiman said. “In no small part due to the enormous amount of support and recognition our community has always given to our military servicemen and servicewomen. I’m sure this year will bring a record number of participants.”
“As far back as I can remember our Memorial Day Parade has been a vibrant tradition,” Councilman Sitarz added. “It’s one of those things that will be passed on indefinitely – for as long as we have a military and as long as our community recognizes their sacrifices.”
Carteret’s ceremonies will focus on the end of the Iraqi War (2003-2011). The Veterans Alliance encourages Iraqi Veterans and all U.S. military service personnel to participate in the Parade. A veterans dinner will also be hosted at the library following the day’s events. For more information, call (732) 541-3836, or email memorialdayparade@carteret.net .
