Carteret, NJ – Mayor Daniel J. Reiman has announced that construction has begun on the New Jersey State Police Marine Barracks adjacent to Carteret’s Waterfront Park. The $1,442,000 project, funded by a federal grant from the Department of Homeland Security, was first proposed in 2012, through a partnership between the State Police and the Borough’s administration.
The building will be located on a 1 acre site previously used as a trailer storage lot for the former occupants, along Carteret’s Arthur Kill waterfront redevelopment area. Once completed, the project will overlook the Borough’s planned marina project.
Construction on the 4,350 square foot police barracks began in early January and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2013. The structure will host the Marine Division of the New Jersey State Police, which is being relocated from Newark Bay in Essex County.
A Port Security Grant from the American Recovery and Investment Act has provided a $1,442,000 grant for the project funding, which has been awarded to cover both planning and construction costs.
Mayor Reiman said, “The barracks project and new presence of state police officers will set a new level of heightened safety standards in Carteret and Central New Jersey, and will further establish a welcome home for our future marina. We are thrilled that the New Jersey State Police have seen fit to enter into this partnership with the Borough, and have chosen our waterfront redevelopment area as the ideal place for their marine barracks facility.”
“Partnerships such as this can only lead to better safety,” Council President and Police Commissioner Skippy Sitarz added, “for our residents, businesses, and visitors.”
The property is owned by the Carteret Redevelopment Agency (CARA), and is being leased to the State of New Jersey through a 40-year land lease.
