Carteret, NJ – *** Please note that this event has been rescheduled for Sunday, 4/13/08, due to rain, and will begin at 12:00 noon.
Carteret On Sunday, April 13, Mayor Dan Reiman will join with the Carteret Little League for a Grand Opening ceremony, unveiling the Borough’s upgraded Civic Center Park. The event will mark the completion of an 18 month rehabilitation project that has transformed the sports complex’s formerly deteriorating baseball and softball fields into a state-of the art facility that now includes passive recreational amenities.
The $3.2 million restoration represents the largest parks improvement project in Carteret since its Waterfront Park development, and is among $11 million in park improvements begun under the Reiman administration. The project has been made possible by the town’s Open Space Referendum, and over $2 million in State and County grants.
The park’s 3 baseball/softball fields have been upgraded to feature low-maintenance and artificial turf, which is also credited as having a low-impact level of resilience, while preserving an authentic “look and feel.” Field improvements also include new post/rail fencing, lighting, bleachers, and scoreboards.
Civic Center Park will also feature passive recreational amenities, along with a variety of new conveniences and aesthetic enhancements. The town’s first “dog park” will be accompanied by a network of new walkways, along with additional landscaping, and trash enclosures. New restroom facilities have been added, and construction is nearing completion on additional parking, which will service both the park and its adjacent commuter bus stop.
“On Saturday we will showcase a public sports complex as impressive and advanced as any,” Mayor Reiman added. “It will be refreshing to see Civic Center Park’s former eyesores and hazards transformed into a usable and appealing facility. This is a town whose interests, achievements, and history are deeply rooted in athletics, and which has traditionally capitalized on public resources for recreation. This state-of-the-art complex represents an advancement for our parks, and also for our youngsters.”
Sunday’s Grand Opening will be preceded by a parade marking the beginning of the Little League’s season. This will begin at 12:00 noon at Carteret Park, and end at Civic Center Park. The ceremony will begin afterwards at Civic Center Park. This is a public event and all are invited to attend.
